Julia Nicholson
Background
In 1962, Julia Nicholson went to the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London, directly after leaving secondary school. Her talent was clearly recognized as in 1964, while studying, she won a six week landscape painting scholarship. However the "art world" at that time was almost exclusively abstract and inevitably she was drawn into this world. Her abstract works in this period progressed from very big canvases to 3 dimensional canvases, followed by 3D constructions and finally welded steel. From 1969-70 she rented a space for welding in a S.P.A.C.E. [ artists cooperative] studio in St Katherine's dock [old warehouses, now expensive apartments].Julia married a sculptor in 1968 and had children. The decade which followed was consumed with childcare and teaching. In 1980 the family moved to a very small farm in Aberdeenshire where Julia learnt the rudiments of farming : from sheep and cattle rearing to growing vegetables, selling eggs and making cheese. She fell in love with this rural life and by 1986 was inspired to resume her painting. Except this time her paintings were landscapes with spectacular skies, often featuring animals and people.
Since 1998 Hanover Fine Art in Dundas Street, Edinburgh, has exhibited Julia Nicholson's works 3 or 4 times a year in mixed shows.
In 2003 Julia held a six week solo exhibition in a large space under the 14C town hall: Raadhuis, Sluis, Holland.
Julia has had several portrait commissions including double portraits and a family portrait.
For the last five years Julia's works have been exhibited by Hanover Fine Art at the Edinburgh Art Fair.
The future may hold innovation and changes.
Because the works on this website are direct from the artist they are more affordable than from a gallery. The price range is determined by the size of the painting and the materials used. In addition, Giclée prints of landscapes can be purchased for considerably less than the originals.Commissions of portraits and personal landscapes are available on request.
